# MyStrands Links Music Recommendations To Wikipedia Info

![](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041im_/http://rww.readwriteweb.netdna-cdn.com/images/MyStrands_logo2.jpg)[MyStrands](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://www.mystrands.com/), a music discovery and social networking site that covers the PC, mobile and physical worlds (see [our profile in January](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/mystrands_revamp.php)), has released an interesting [new recommendations feature](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://labs.mystrands.com/features/artistspath/biofacts.html). It uses the MyStrands Public APIs (called [OpenStrands](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://www.mystrands.com/openstrands/overview.vm)) to link their social music recommendations to Wikipedia information. Essentially it’s a mashup of MyStrands music recommendations with artist information from Wikipedia. It’s not a huge feature, but it’s a neat example of the innovation that is happening with music and the Web.

Music discovery and recommendation systems is a growing segment. I still like [Pandora](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://www.pandora.com/), where (as [Alex Iskold wrote](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/recommendation_engines.php) about in January) music is measured in terms of its “genetic” make up. But there are many other startups doing music recommendations. The [Music 2.0 Directory lists](https://web.archive.org/web/20111114095041/http://music2dot0.wetpaint.com/page/Music+Discovery) the following companies in this segment:

If you’ve used any of the above services, let us know in the comments. I’d like to check out a few of these and see how their recommendations stack up.
